Helsinki buses to use biomethane as vehicle fuel

January 23, 2017. Finnish bus company Helsingin Bussiliikenne Oy (HelB) will introduce biomethane this year to replace the natural gas it uses as fuel in the units operating in the Helsinki metropolitan area.

Following a bidding process, this biofuel was selected by Helsinki Region Transport (HSL) for public transport services in the region.

With the use of biomethane, which is produced at national level from biodegradable waste, it is anticipated that carbon dioxide emissions will be reduced by an annual total of 1.367 tones, based on the annual consumption of 600.000 kg of biogas from 22 vehicles.

Gasum will be the Finnish company responsible for producing the biofuel from fully renewable raw materials, which has been awarded the Nordic Ecolabel and recognized with the Made in Finland Flag brand.
