August 30, 2023. Dourogás and Leroy Merlin announced a collaboration for the use of biomethane in the heavy vehicles that are at the service of the chain of stores specializing in the sale of DIY and decoration products.
The pilot project began in September and is expected to last three months. During this period, the emission of more than ten tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere will be avoided, compared to alternatives of fossil origin. Each biomethane-powered vehicle will cover a monthly average of approximately 5,000 kilometres.
Energy of renewable origin and gradual substitution of natural gas for vehicles, biomethane is an alternative with high environmental performance, storable, eco-sustainable and economically profitable. Its versatility means that it can also be used in the production of electricity, injection into natural gas networks and heat production.
Compared to the first generation of liquid biofuels, biomethane does not put pressure on the food chain, stimulates the circular economy and promotes local and regional development, undoubtedly reinforcing national energy independence.
“Given the context we are currently experiencing, the energy transition in the mobility sector is imperative, especially heavy mobility. Biomethane represents an unquestionable opportunity to decarbonize the economy, industry and transport in particular,” says João Filipe Jesus, CEO of Dourogás.
On the part of Leroy Merlin and the respective associated carriers, no additional investments or fleet renewal will be necessary, since the vehicles currently powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) are fully compatible with the use of biomethane.
The Director of Transportation at Leroy Merlin, Dalila Tavares, clarifies that this project is part of the company’s Positive Impact Commitments. “We work daily to play a differentiating and influential role in sustainability, with clear and ambitious objectives,” she says.
