Swiss Post to set up its own filling station network for biogas at eleven parcel centers

Swiss Post plans to set up its own filling station network for biogas at eleven parcel centers in Germany.

October 19, 2023. Swiss Post plans to set up its own filling station network for biogas at eleven parcel centers in Germany. The climate-neutral fuel Bio-CNG from waste and residual materials will be supplied by OG Clean Fuels. The company will also build and operate the filling stations, DHL Group announced in Bonn on Thursday.

A first Bio-CNG filling station is already in place, and has been since the end of September at the parcel center in Greven (North Rhine-Westphalia). Another filling station went online on Thursday at the parcel center in Osterweddingen (Saxony-Anhalt). A total of eleven CNG filling stations are to be set up by next year.

Currently, Swiss Post has 170 gas-powered trucks in operation. By the end of 2023, there will be 360. DHL’s freight partners with their own CNG vehicles will also be able to use the CNG filling stations.

Swiss Post stressed that when the fuel is burned, only as much CO2 is released as was previously absorbed from the environment during production. “With the exclusive use of bio-CNG from waste and residual materials, climate-neutral transport is possible,” it said. With a tank capacity of between 120 and 180 kilograms, the vehicles would have a range of 500 to 700 kilometers.
