April 13, 2023. As part of its strategy to combat climate change, Nestlé maintains a commitment to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by half by 2030, while by 2050 the goal will be to reach zero net emissions.
In this sense, through the alliance with its transport provider Transportistas Unidos Mexicanos (TUM), it integrated trucks powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) for logistics activities between the distribution centers and its coffee and chocolate plants.
“All the supply of the coffee and chocolate plants to our Toluca distribution center is being carried out with CNG units; we can say that the plants have a sustainable logistics”, commented Christian González, Director of Transportation of Nestlé Mexico.
At the moment, with the operation of nine Shacman CNG trucks, which are part of the fleet that TUM has operating at Nestlé, 12.7 tons of CO2 are being emitted per month, which means that in one year more than 150 tons of carbon dioxide would be reached.
Based on what González expressed, the fleet of vehicles powered by CNG could increase to 35 in 2023 and by 2025 between 72 and 75 units would be operating, which would allow sustainable logistics between the seven plants and four Nestlé distribution centers.
In this way, once these new trucks are incorporated, the reduction in tons of CO2 emitted could be multiplied by seven times, in addition to the fact that a unit with CNG engines represents an emission of 80% less CO2 than diesel.
