July 18, 2026. The Port Authority of Las Palmas, Spain, carried out the first refueling of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the innovative fast ferry Mercedes Pinto of Baleària Canarias, which debuted on the route between Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and Fuerteventura to strengthen connectivity in the archipelago.
This operation represents a milestone for maritime transport in the islands, as it is the first LNG refueling carried out at the Port of Las Palmas and the first by tanker truck that Baleària has performed on a vessel in the Canary Islands.
The refueling took place at the Juan Sebastián Elcano dock using the MTTS (Multi Truck To Ship) system, which allows for simultaneous refueling from several tanker trucks to the ship’s tanks. Specifically, the operation was carried out with two tankers and a supply of 600 MWh, with both units pumping simultaneously. The pumping rate was 600 l/min per tanker, achieving a total pumping rate of 1,200 l/min.
This operation reinforces the technical and logistical capacity of the Port of Las Palmas to handle refueling with more eco-efficient fuels, and in this regard, Baleària Canarias takes another step in its commitment to eco-efficiency, technological innovation, and the continuous improvement of its services in the archipelago.
The CEO of Baleària, Georges Bassoul, stated that “with this supply operation, Baleària Canarias is taking a first step to promote the development and regular supply of these sustainable fuels in the archipelago, with the aim of continuing to move towards more efficient and environmentally responsible maritime mobility.”
