JSL and Volkswagen adopt the use of 100% gas powered trucks

June 2, 2022. JSL, the company with the largest portfolio of logistics services in Brazil, and Volkswagen, one of the largest automobile manufacturers in the world, began operations with a 100% gas-powered bitren truck. The joint action is in line with the sustainability objectives of both companies to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.

The model chosen for the operation is the Scania R 410, with an engine powered by compressed natural gas (CNG), manufactured by the Swedish brand that is part of the Volkswagen Group. The truck travels from Piracicaba to São Bernardo do Campo, in São Paulo, transporting automotive parts to supply the Volkswagen assembly line, a route that was originally carried out by a diesel vehicle. Although the cargo transported is considered light, with a maximum weight of 16 tons, the volume is high.

The use of the truck in this operation reduces pollutant emissions by 15% and allows CNG to be mixed with biomethane, making trips more sustainable. The company also carried out tests to evaluate consumption and autonomy and identify the ideal routes. When filled with the maximum volume (230 m³ of gas, or around 944 litres), the R 410, which is equipped with a 410 hp engine, can travel around 500 km. As it is a bit-train -two trailers-, the model is even more efficient compared to single-trailer vehicles.

“At JSL we have adopted different measures to mitigate the impacts of our emissions. To increase efficiency in the operation of Volkswagen, one of our first clients, we seek to prioritize alternative fuels through a 100% gas-powered truck. The initiative is the spearhead of a new operating model that combines logistics optimization and the reduction of the emission of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases”, highlights Eduardo Pereira, Commercial Director of JSL.

“The Volkswagen Group has the goal of being carbon neutral by 2050, based on its Way To Zero strategy, and Volkswagen do Brasil has adopted a series of measures to collaborate with this goal. Having the first natural gas truck with our partner JSL allows us to take an important step in the decarbonization of the supply chain and production logistics”, says Miguel Sanches, Vice President of Operations at Volkswagen Brazil.
