March 28, 2022. The Ministry of Energy and Mines of Peru (MINEM) reported that more than 20,000 light vehicles running on gasoline and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) have accessed the use of natural gas, through the NGV Savings Program, which finances the conversion with the resources of the Energy Social Inclusion Fund (FISE), which allows owners a monthly saving of more than 50% in fuel consumption.
This program is carried out in the regions of Lima, Callao, Junín, Ica, Cusco, Piura, La Libertad, Ancash and Lambayeque, and it is planned to be extended to other regions of the country that have natural gas filling stations, as is the case of Arequipa and Tumbes, the closest to having this type of facilities.
For beneficiaries, the return period is 3 years, in the case of users from the provinces, the program contemplates the assignment of a discount voucher of S/ 1,000, applicable on the final price of the conversion, which will help reduce the value of the installment and will enable the monthly payment of this credit through the loading of natural gas at the stations.
The General Directorate of Hydrocarbons (DGH) of the MINEM specified that with these vehicle conversions, it is sought that drivers, mainly taxi drivers and carriers, access the cheapest and most sustainable fuel available in the country, and are not affected by the strong volatility and rise in international oil prices, which currently affect the price of diesel and LPG at the local level.
According to official statistics, to date 16,388 gasoline-powered vehicles have been converted to CNG, that is, 74.5% of the national total transformed by the Program; while there are 5,633 LPG cars converted to natural gas, which represents 25.5% of the universe of 22,021.
The NGV Savings Program is part of the national policy of widespread use of natural gas, which the government of President Pedro Castillo is decisively promoting so that all Peruvians can enjoy the benefits of this clean and cheap fuel.
