October 9, 2021. Naturgy and Aquaservice have reached an agreement for the energy company to supply biomethane to the last-mile distribution fleet of the water distributor. Aquaservice will thus become the first company to use this renewable energy in its delivery vehicles throughout the Spanish territory.
The biomethane will come from the production facilities that Naturgy has at the Elena landfill, in Cerdanyola del Vallès (Barcelona), which is the first plant to inject renewable gas from waste into the Spanish gas network.
The contract foresees the supply of a maximum 2GW/year of biomethane. This fuel substitution will contribute to a reduction in emissions of up to 350 t CO2/year, which is equivalent to removing 53,000 vehicles from the circulation of a city for one day.
The two companies also work together to promote sustainable electric mobility, with biomethane and green hydrogen, through the last-mile delivery fleet that Aquaservice operates in the country.
Óscar Arrazola, Naturgy Mobility delegate, highlighted that, “with this first commercialization of biomethane for vehicles, we once again show our commitment to sustainability and to our customers, who are increasingly demanding more sustainable and environmentally friendly products”.
For his part, Rafael Vaño, Head of Purchasing and Fleet at Aquaservice, pointed out that “the commitment to the circular economy and sustainable mobility have been key for Aquaservice to become the first carbon neutral company in the sector. Now, and thanks to Naturgy and its supply of biomethane, we are taking a further step in reducing emissions in all our activity, promoting sustainable last-mile distribution in Spanish cities”.
