December 10, 2022. Teams from Autoroutes et Tunnel du Mont Blanc (ATMB) and Shell are installing the first liquefied natural gas (LNG) tank in Haute-Savoie, above the Bonneville two-lane service area. Shell’s sixth LNG station in France will be operational in early 2023.
By reducing nitrogen oxide and fine particle emissions by 90%, and carbon dioxide emissions by almost 22%, LNG is an interesting alternative to diesel to decarbonize long-distance road transport. Installed on the A40 motorway in the Bonneville rest area, in Haute-Savoie, this new facility will come into operation in the first quarter of 2023.
“This new action is part of ATMB’s commitments to improve air quality in the Arve valley. ATMB thus continues to reduce its ecological footprint in the territory, and that of its clients, the drivers. It provides practical and concrete solutions to the transport of goods by road with the deployment of LNG and green hydrogen stations in the network. For light vehicles, it also offers decarbonization alternatives and promotes 100% electric mobility, carpooling and soft mobility with the development of cycling routes throughout its territory”, explains Louis Gauthier, Director of Development, Engineering and Innovation at ATMB.
With this association, Shell is also committed to the development of LNG. Michaël Littiere, Head of LNG and Bio-LNG Development at Shell France, said: “The company’s LNG network already covers the main countries in Europe with 61 owned stations: the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Spain and France. In addition, our Shell card now allows customers to refuel at more than 155 LNG facilities in Europe. For the coming months, our ambition is twofold: the goal is to operate at least 10 liquefied natural gas stations in France and one hundred in Europe by 2024”.
