The sale of natural gas vehicles grew by 225% in Colombia

April 24, 2023. The benefits for both the environment and consumers are increasing the number of natural gas vehicles, especially in the cargo segment.

This is confirmed by the report to March by Fenalco and Naturgas, on Alternative Energy Sources and Fuels, which, although it shows a 17.2% decrease in total new registrations compared to March 2022, also registers an increase of 225% in the sale of vehicles dedicated to compressed natural gas (CNG).

According to Naturgas, among the main advantages of this type of vehicle is a reduction of close to 100% in the emissions of fine particulate matter; savings of up to 50% compared to gasoline and 35% compared to diesel; has no restrictions on movement; taxes do not exceed 1% of the commercial value of the vehicle; has a 10% discount on SOAT insurance premiums; new vehicles will be exempt for 10 years from obtaining the Polluting Emissions Certificate and will have a 30% discount on mechanical technical reviews.

“Colombians are increasingly aware of the benefits offered by this type of vehicle and the incentives brought by Law 2128 of 2021, which promotes the supply, continuity, reliability, and coverage of natural gas fuel in the country,” said Eduardo Visbal, Vice President of Foreign Trade and the Automotive Sector of Fenalco.
