July 18, 2022. Next autumn, AWM’s Munich waste management fleet will feature 34 new Scania compressed natural gas (CNG) waste collection vehicles equipped with Allison Automatic gearboxes, in order to improve the air quality in the city center.

AWM is one of the largest urban waste management companies in Germany. It has been operating 10 Scania CNG vehicles with Allison 3000TM Series gearboxes for several years as part of a sustainable and ecological renewal program for its fleet. In the fall of this year, the fleet will increase by 34 trucks, 22 of which have already been delivered to the company. AWM intends to change all of its 184 units to green powertrains.

Half of the 34 new vehicles will be Scania R 280 B 6×2*4 NB/CNG with long distance CR20L cab and 3,750mm body. The other half are Scania L 280 B6x2*4 NB/CNG with low-floor cab, CityDoor and 3,550 mm body. They all have an Allison 3000 Series automatic transmission and a 5-cylinder in-line CNG Euro 6 engine with a displacement of 9.3 liters. They have an output of 206 kW (276 hp) and a torque of 1,350 Nm at 1,000 rpm or more. The bodywork is FaunVariopress with a Zoeller elevation system.

After a tender at European level, this general configuration of the vehicle was chosen. As early as 1970, AWM opted for fully automatic gearboxes to avoid clutch changes and offer more comfort to drivers. Another point in favor of the Scania-Allison combination was the fuel saving measures available. Thanks to Allison’s FuelSense® 2.0 software, gear shift points are optimally set and energy consumption is reduced.
