Bio-CNG mobility policy distinguished at national level in France

Lorient Agglomération received the Mobility award for the deployment of Bio-CNG powered buses in its transport network.

December 9, 2023. The French city of Paris and La Tribune organized a new edition of the Paris Zero Carbon Forum on December 7. In collaboration with France Urbaine, this event brought together all stakeholders with the aim of continuing the commitment to measures to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. An independent jury, made up of academics, journalists and business leaders recognized innovative actions and concrete measures aimed at accelerating the ecological transition.

Lorient Agglomération received the Mobility award for the deployment of Bio-CNG powered buses in its transport network.

According to Fabrice Loher, President of Lorient Agglomération and Mayor of Lorient, this distinction highlights the exemplary character of the region in terms of ecological and energy transitions and its commitment to a proactive approach based, in particular, on the decarbonization of its energy. In fact, the energy transformation of our territory is an important axis of our action for this mandate. Lorient Agglomération should not miss this meeting to become the reference center for clean energies. In this context, hydrogen and Bio-CNG are promising ways to reduce emissions of air pollutants and thus combat global warming, while meeting the needs of residents in their daily trips.”

Within the framework of the energy transition and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, Lorient Agglomération has set the goal of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector by 78%.

To win this bet, it launched a revolution in mobility with the complete renewal of its bus fleet (95 vehicles) that began in September 2022. This fleet will be composed within 10 years of 80% Bio-CNG units and a 20% hydrogen.

In this sense, 13 Bio-CNG buses have already joined the Izilo Mobilités network in Lorient Agglomération since September 2022 and the first hydrogen bus will be put into circulation very soon.

This mobility revolution is accompanied by the creation of local sectors for the production, distribution and use of Bio-CNG and hydrogen in order to supply maritime and land transport networks, and to support the industrial and research sector.

To host, refuel and maintain this new fleet of carbon-free vehicles, Lorient Agglomération began work on the main bus station located in Lorient and put the secondary station in Quéven into operation last September.
