June 6, 2022. Hamburg-based Containerships, a unit of France’s CMA CGM, is now fueling half of its fleet of trucks in Finland with Bio-LNG, as part of plans to further slash emissions.
Containerships said in a social media post last week that 50 percent of the company’s current operating trucking fleet in Finland is already powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).
The firm did not reveal the number of trucks it operates in Finland. According to its website, it has a total of 22 trucks in the country out of which eleven are Volvo LNG trucks.
“We made the switch and now operate all of our LNG trucks on Bio-LNG,” it said in the post.
With this decision, Containerships has reduced the fleets greenhouse gas emissions “significantly”.
Liquefied biogas or Bio-LNG allows roughly a 90 percent reduction in GHG emissions in road transport versus diesel, Containerships said.
The company’s parent CMA CGM is heavily investing in LNG as fuel and expects to have at least 44 LNG-powered ships in its fleet by 2024.
