March 3, 2022. Frigoscandia, Sweden’s market leader for warm food logistics, has ordered 112 new Scania trucks for delivery over the next two years. The order, which includes 73 biogas-powered units, is the largest for heavy gas-powered vehicles in the country.
“A transition to a fossil fuel-free operation is underway, where we gradually replace our conventional diesel trucks with vehicles that run on renewable energy,” says Peter Haveneth, CEO of Frigoscandia. “The goal is to achieve a fossil-free operation by 2025, and these new units are an important step in the transition.”
The 112 vehicles are distributed between Frigoscandia’s subsidiary, Svebol Logistics, which has transport operations mainly in the Stockholm and Mälardalen area, and Frigoscandia Åkeri, which operates throughout the country. The order covers several different types of trucks for long-haul, regional and local distribution.
For their long-distance transports in Frigoscandia’s network of more than 30 warehouses and terminals in Sweden and Norway, they have chosen the latest generation Scania R410, R460 and R500 units that are more energy efficient and reduce fuel consumption. Of the 69 trucks, most run on liquid biogas and the rest on biodiesel produced from rapeseed oil.
Liquefied biogas (LBG) is making considerable progress in Sweden due to the long range of up to 160 km in a Scania vehicle, local production and the economic benefits of the fuel. Compared to the price of diesel, the cost of liquefied biogas is generally lower. There are currently 25 LBG filling stations in the country and last year deliveries of the fuel more than doubled compared to 2020.
