Government of Minas Gerais extends public policy in favor of NGV consumption

As of January 1, 2024, the extension of Resolution No. 47 that establishes the variable margin policy for the distribution of CNG for Gasmig will be in force.

December 29, 2023. As of January 1, 2024, the extension of Resolution No. 47 that establishes the variable margin policy for the distribution of compressed natural gas (CNG) for the Minas Gerais Gas Company (Gasmig) will be in force. The measure, which would initially be in force until the end of 2023, will now be in force until December 31, 2024.

The resolution allows the CNG distribution margin to be varied depending on the competitiveness of gasoline, with the aim of alleviating the segment served by the concessionaire and, in addition, establishing a less polluting alternative in accordance with fuel market practices. Due to the established policy, since 2022 there has been a change in perspective with a tendency for CNG consumption to stabilize in Minas Gerais, Brazil.

With the public policy on natural gas, the Secretary of State for Economic Development (Sede-MG) establishes rules for the automatic application of the margin variation practiced by Gasmig, with weekly updates of gaseous fuel prices based on competitiveness with the gasoline. The variation of the margin is directly linked to fuel prices at filling stations, using the Educação Fiscal MG application to determine the value of gasoline.

That is, the variation in the price of gas allows it to be a competitive alternative to the most popular fuel used in automobiles. To adopt the measure, Central-MG, together with the concessionaire, carried out an economic and financial impact analysis, considering the current macroeconomic scenario of the market.

In practice, in addition to the stabilization of consumption, in just over a year of the adopted policy being in effect, five new CNG Supply Contracts were signed to serve new regions, within the framework of the CNG Corridors Project. Given these positive indicators, Sede-MG chose to extend the distribution policy before its expiration, publishing, on December 27, Resolution No. 53/2023.
