Iveco inaugurates biomethane plant from organic waste in Italy

Iveco participated in the opening of the Contarina plant for the production and liquefaction of biomethane, produced from the treatment of wet and vegetable waste.

October 23, 2023. Iveco participated in the opening of the Contarina plant for the production and liquefaction of biomethane, produced from the treatment of wet and vegetable waste collected door to door in the 49 municipalities of the Priula Basin. The new structure was officially inaugurated by Vannia Gava, Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy Security, and numerous local authorities, together with Valerio Vanacore, Head of Alternative Propulsions for the Italian Iveco market and Antonella Ceccato, General Director of Industrial Vehicles.

The project allows us to take another step towards environmental sustainability, unique in the territory, but also at the national level, as it is the first plant financed by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) that officially comes into operation. The existing composting facility was expanded with a new anaerobic digestion section to produce biomethane in gaseous and liquid form. In addition to being injected into the grid, part of the Bio-LNG is used to fuel 226 waste collection vehicles, including the organic waste from which this green fuel is produced. A true circular system, where there is no waste.

Biomethane is a renewable source that can make a great contribution to the energy transition in the country: in Italy, in fact, it has considerable potential thanks to the availability of various sources of biomass and it is important to support the construction of these plants, since that this resource can play a key role in the decarbonization of the energy and transport sectors, reducing dependence on the outside world and promoting the circularity of processes.
