September 17, 2026. Gasnam organized the Hydrogen Vehicle Caravan—an initiative held as part of European Mobility Week—which traveled to various locations across the Madrid region to showcase the real-world development this technology is achieving locally.
The event also saw the participation of the Community of Madrid and the Madrid City Council. The Community was represented by one of the Regional Transport Consortium’s hydrogen buses, while the City Council participated through EMT Madrid, which contributed another vehicle of this type. The caravan concluded with an official ceremony at the EMT Operations Center in Entrevías—the site of EMT’s hydrogen refueling station, a pioneering municipal facility that produces, stores, and supplies hydrogen to fuel the company’s bus fleet.
“The choice of EMT’s hydrogen refueling station as the conclusion point for this caravan was no coincidence; the facility undoubtedly represents a milestone in the international decarbonization of public transport,” noted Alfonso Sánchez, CEO of EMT Madrid.
A new feature of this year’s event was that the main route through the Community of Madrid was bolstered by the arrival of vehicles from six other autonomous regions: Galicia, the Basque Country, Aragon, Catalonia, Castilla-La Mancha, and Andalusia. Specifically, participating passenger cars traveled from A Coruña/Vigo (organized by AGH2 – the Galician Hydrogen Association), Bilbao (Petronor), Zaragoza (ARPA), Tarragona (Carburos Metálicos), Puertollano (CNH2 – National Hydrogen Centre), and Seville (SailH2). This influx of vehicles from across the country highlighted the growing national scope of hydrogen mobility and Madrid’s role as a meeting point for the entire ecosystem.
The participating fleet included a wide variety of vehicle types, demonstrating that hydrogen technology is already applicable to all forms of transport: urban (EMT Madrid/Caetano) and regional (Alsa/Solaris) hydrogen buses, a waste collection truck manufactured by Evarm for Prezero, a Toyota Hilux FCEV pickup prototype—appearing in Spain for the first time—and passenger cars from Toyota, Hyundai, and BMW, including the Toyota Mirai, Hyundai Nexo, and BMW iX5 models.
