Naturgy promotes the first Bio-LNG project in Spain to accelerate the decarbonization of transportation

September 9, 2023. Naturgy will promote the first Bio-LNG project in Spain within its commitment to the decarbonization of the current energy mix and innovation in sustainability. BioLNG is biomethane, a renewable gas produced from the recovery of waste, which in this case is liquefied to transport it to the final consumer. This process is essential to promote the decarbonization of transportation.

Within this commitment, Naturgy has already signed the first long-term purchase contract for renewable gas in liquid state. The agreement will entail the purchase of an annual production of 25 GWh of Bio-LNG obtained at the Sologas waste recovery plant in As Somozas (La Coruña), whose entry into operation is scheduled for the end of 2023.

ADDSynergy, from the Pietro Fiorentini Group, will be the company in charge of implementing a process that will allow the integrated production of Bio-LNG and liquid CO2 to achieve CO2 capture and increase the quality of Bio-LNG. This capture will grant a negative carbon intensity to the product, which represents a very relevant milestone to meet the decarbonization objectives committed by Spain.

“Renewable gas must play a leading role in the decarbonization of transport, a sector that concentrates almost a third of greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union. This project, a pioneer in Spain, represents a step further in the search for innovative solutions to promote biomethane as a strategic lever in the energy transition,” explains Silvia Sanjoaquín, Director of New Business at Naturgy.
