April 18, 2023. Nexa Resources, one of the five largest zinc producers in the world, in alliance with the logistics operator Maersk, started a project for the use of trucks powered by natural gas vehicles (NGV) in the transport of materials to the Cerro Lindo and El Porvenir Mining Units, in Peru, with which it expects to register a reduction of CO2 in its value chain.
In total there are five vehicles that have already been circulating and showing important results, which represents 25% of the current fleet of 20 units.
“This is only the first step, since we hope to increase the fleet and have 100% CNG trucks for the transport of materials,” says Evelyn Serrano, Logistics Manager at Nexa Peru.
It should be remembered that Nexa recently announced its new sustainability commitments aligned with environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria and its Sustainable Development Goals.
“With this first implementation we will achieve a real reduction of a little more than 23 tons of CO2 equivalent per year, which confirms that we are on the way to having increasingly sustainable operations, impacting not only Nexa but also the entire value chain,” adds Serrano.
In line with the Paris Agreement, the company also hopes to achieve neutrality in its emissions by 2040 and reach “Net Zero” emissions by 2050. For this reason, it has decided to involve the entire value chain to achieve said goal.
