July 14, 2025. The Peruvian Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM) is promoting the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a strategic alternative to diesel in land freight and passenger transportation, thanks to its cost benefits and low environmental impact.
During the Vision 2030 Congress: “Challenges of Land Freight Transportation: Towards Energy Diversification and International Competitiveness,” the Vice Minister of Hydrocarbons, Iris Cárdenas, highlighted that LNG will be key to building a reliable, efficient, and sustainable energy system based on technological innovation and the promotion of private investment.
Among the advances presented, she highlighted the creation of a specific category for LNG within current regulations, which has enabled the development of specialized infrastructure.
“Currently, we can find fixed, transportable, and mobile service stations,” she added. To date, stations are already operating in Chiclayo, Trujillo, as well as at the entrance and exit of Lima, including Puente Piedra and Mala stations. Additionally, a mobile station has been authorized in Arequipa to supply fuel to more than 530 trucks.
According to projections from the General Directorate of Energy Efficiency (DGEE), LNG will be highly competitive with diesel in heavy-duty transport, with an estimated demand of 8.16 petajoules by 2040.
“We are promoting low-carbon technologies and fostering the development and widespread use of the natural gas industry through programs such as NGV Savings from the Energy Social Inclusion Fund (FISE),” the Vice Minister emphasized.
