December 2, 2023. Sociedade de Transportes Colectivos do Porto (STCP) began to incorporate, since November, 11.5% biomethane in the supply of the 333 buses powered by natural gas that are part of the fleet, the company reported it’s a statement. “As biomethane is a 100% renewable gas, STCP now has 36 more zero-emission vehicles, which are added to the twenty 100% electric buses in circulation, which represents 12% of the total emissions-free fleet.”
The STCP fleet is currently made up of 434 vehicles, 77% of which are powered by natural gas (of which 11.5% are fueled by biomethane), 5% are 100% electric and 18% use diesel.
For the President of the operator’s Board of Directors, Cristina Pimentel, “this incorporation of biomethane will allow an increase in the number of 100% emission-free units, thus reinforcing the commitment acquired with the decarbonization of the operation, as well as the desire to actively contribute to the quality of life of the populations of the municipalities in which we operate.”
“This important process of decarbonization of the current STCP fleet began with Dourogás, a company responsible for the supply of natural gas and biomethane, a 100% renewable gas produced from the biomass of urban, industrial and agricultural waste. Also supplied by Dourogás, Porto Ambiente, a municipal environmental company, will begin to use this energy source in its collection vehicles.”
