President of Bolivia orders studies on LNG use in heavy-duty transport

This initiative is part of a comprehensive vision to transform the national transport sector toward an energy mix with a greater share of natural gas.

October 4, 2026. Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz has instructed the Minister of Public Works, Services, and Housing, Mauricio Zamora, to initiate technical studies evaluating the adoption of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as an energy alternative for heavy-duty transport in the country.

This initiative is part of a comprehensive vision to transform the national transport sector, aiming to progressively shift toward an energy mix with a greater share of natural gas while simultaneously promoting the modernization of the vehicle fleet.

Under the President’s directive, work will begin on an assessment covering the technical, economic, and logistical feasibility of LNG. This includes evaluating storage and supply infrastructure, refueling stations, vehicle range, operating costs, and the conditions required for implementation.

“We are working on a structural transformation of Bolivian transport. We first moved forward with compressed natural gas (CNG) for public transport, and now, at the direction of President Rodrigo Paz, we are going to study a specific alternative for heavy-duty transport: LNG,” the Minister stated.

The official explained that the goal is to create alternatives that provide heavy-duty transport with more efficient energy options and progressively reduce reliance on liquid fuels.
