Baleària’s new dual-engine LNG fast ferry between Barcelona and the Balearic Islands reduces CO2 emissions by 22%

In 2024, the shipping company has reached its record for LNG supply in the port of Barcelona, tripling the volume of the previous year.

December 12, 2024. Baleària’s new dual-engine liquefied natural gas (LNG) fast ferry on the Barcelona-Alcudia-Ciutadella route reduces CO2 emissions into the atmosphere by 22% compared to the high-speed ship it previously operated. Baleària’s President, Adolfo Utor, has expressed his satisfaction with the results of this first high-speed LNG-powered maritime connection from Barcelona to the Balearic Islands, at a presentation in the port of the Catalan city, which brought together a hundred people from the shipping company’s stakeholders.

Baleària is the only ferry company that uses natural gas as fuel, a commitment that began in 2017 in the port of Barcelona, with a pilot project for an auxiliary engine using this energy. Between 2019 and 2024, it has progressively incorporated 11 newly built and re-engined ships that sail with LNG into its fleet. In the port of Barcelona, this year Baleària has carried out 80% of the liquefied natural gas supply operations. This is equivalent to 325,000 MWh, a record figure for the shipping company, which triples the volume of last year.

Baleària has transported more than half of the cargo and passengers from the port of Barcelona to the Balearic Islands, on its four daily departures that connect with Mallorca, Menorca, Eivissa and Formentera. “This year we have transported more than 500,000 passengers on the overall routes from Barcelona, which represents a growth of 12%,” said Utor.
