FSEW achieves fleet decarbonization with Iveco CNG trucks

The company has retired its final four diesel trucks, replacing them with six new Iveco S-Way CNG vehicles.

January 22, 2025. In March 2022, FSEW set an ambitious goal to fully decarbonize its road freight operations by 2025. Today, that mission has been accomplished as the company has retired its final four diesel trucks, replacing them with six new Iveco S-Way CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) vehicles.

The 40-strong FSEW fleet now includes 35 Iveco S-Way Natural Gas trucks, each covering over 110,000 miles annually. These vehicles deliver up to a 95% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to equivalent diesel models when powered by biomethane. Since adopting its first CNG truck in 2022, FSEW has achieved over 6.7 million miles using natural gas, resulting in an estimated CO2 saving of approximately 8,500 tonnes.

Managing Director Geoff Tomlinson explained the motivation behind the company’s decarbonization journey, “We embarked on this mission after I read that Cardiff was the fourth-most polluted city in the UK. That was a wake-up call for me. We began decarbonizing our fleet in March 2022, and I’m delighted that we’ve now reached our target.”

Iveco’s natural gas engines are designed to offer a low-carbon alternative across its range, ensuring sustainability without compromising performance. Reflecting on FSEW’s adoption of these vehicles, Tomlinson said, “We run 35 of these trucks for a reason! They’re comfortable, reliable, and their CNG engines deliver power comparable to diesel counterparts. Plus, with a CNG refueling station conveniently located near our depot, it’s an easy choice for us to stick with these trucks.”
