September 7, 2025. YPF, the Argentine state-owned oil company, achieved a new milestone by carrying out the first fracturing operation using compressed natural gas (CNG) produced in Vaca Muerta. This advance contributes to reducing well costs through the savings generated by the use of gas and the replacement of diesel.
The operation was carried out in the La Amarga Chica block, where YPF used its own natural gas to feed a bifuel fracturing system that operates with a combination of diesel and natural gas. The CNG supply was provided from a new bulk loading station located in Añelo, designed to allow for continuous and safe gas dispatch, setting a precedent in the industry.
In this way, YPF implemented an energy transformation by successfully supplying its system with CNG produced, dispatched, and transported entirely by the company in Vaca Muerta.
The new YPF Directo GNC station will not only supply the company’s operations. The oil company reported that this new station can be used by other operators, industries not connected to gas pipelines, and trucks that use CNG.
“This advancement positions YPF as a leader in energy innovation and opens up new business opportunities. With this initiative, it reaffirms its commitment to efficiency, sustainability, and technological development in Vaca Muerta,” they stated.
