Bucaramanga begins a new era of clean urban transportation with natural gas buses

The new buses, equipped with Euro VI technology, reduce particulate matter and nitrogen oxide emissions by 99.9% and carbon dioxide emissions by 50%.

November 8, 2025. With the introduction of 12 dual-fuel natural gas buses, Bucaramanga, Colombia, begins a new chapter toward sustainability and the modernization of public transportation. The vehicles are already serving the routes between the UIS Station, Provenza, and the Portal Norte, as part of the relaunch of the Integrated Metropolitan Transportation System (SITME).

The new buses, equipped with Euro VI technology, reduce particulate matter and nitrogen oxide emissions by 99.9% and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 50%, making a decisive contribution to improving air quality in the metropolitan area.

Each unit has a 280-horsepower engine, a range of over 300 kilometers, and a monthly consumption of 50,000 m3 of natural gas, which will prevent the annual emission of approximately 891 tons of CO2. Furthermore, they are ten times quieter than traditional buses, reducing noise pollution in the city.

John Jairo Contreras, Vice President of Large Accounts at Vanti, emphasized that this advancement is the result of a partnership between the SITME, the Metropolitan Area, and the energy company. “These buses represent a real commitment to sustainability and the health of Bucaramanga residents,” he stated.

The fleet will be refueled at three of Vanti’s main stations—La Virgen, Servisantander, and La Americana—which will guarantee a constant supply of clean fuel.
