August 8, 2026. The Argentine government updated the weight and dimension regulations for vehicles used for passenger and freight transport under national jurisdiction through Decree 689/2026. The amendment incorporates new vehicle configurations and adapts the regulations to current automotive industry manufacturing standards, with the aim of improving transportation efficiency and simplifying procedures.
One of the main changes is the adjustment of maximum dimensions for vehicles with new engine technologies. Specifically, configurations are included for vehicles powered by dedicated compressed natural gas (CNG), which will be able to use extra-wide tires to offset the higher costs associated with these technologies and improve their carrying capacity. The measure also incorporates similar criteria for pure electric and hybrid vehicles, promoting greater use of less harmful technologies.
For freight vehicles, new maximum lengths are established: 19.60 meters for single-articulated tractor-trailer configurations, and 23.40, 26.50, and 31.25 meters for double-articulated road trains, according to B1, B2, and B3 configurations, respectively. The update aims to align with new regional manufacturing standards and leverage the availability of natural gas for vehicles resulting from the development of the Vaca Muerta shale formation.
The reform seeks to create a more dynamic regulatory framework, capable of keeping pace with the evolution of the automotive and transportation industries, promoting more efficient technologies, and improving the conditions for the development of a modern, competitive freight and passenger transport system with lower logistics costs.
