Volánbusz to buy new natural gas buses in Budapest

The state bus company Volánbusz Transport Company Ltd. called for public tenders to buy 164 new buses powered by natural gas.

August 14, 2021. The state bus company Volánbusz Transport Company Ltd., which provides public transport service in Budapest, called for public tenders to buy 164 new buses powered by compressed natural gas (CNG), according to a report by state news wire MTI.

If the tenders are successful, 75 new local CNG models will be put into service in communities on the outskirts of the Hungarian capital and 10 in Szeged, as well as 40 suburban units in Szolnok and 39 in Zalaegerszeg from spring 2022, Volánbusz said.

Currently, the company operates 61 gas-powered buses in Zalaegerszeg, Nyíregyháza and Szeged.

As part of its vehicle fleet upgrade program launched in 2018, Volánbusz will put 1,401 new and used buses into service by the end of August. It will acquire 1,665 units in 2021, which will begin to circulate this year and in 2022. By the end of next year, 40% of the total fleet will be renewed.
