August 27, 2021. A declared sustainability objective of the HOYER Group is the reduction of the CO2 footprint. In addition to modernizing the fleet, the German international logistics company is also increasingly relying on new drives with energy sources such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG), as well as fleets of electric forklifts.
HOYER is gradually expanding its fleet with LNG trucks and CNG vehicles. It currently has a total of 25 gas-powered units in use: 12 fueled by LNG and 13 by CNG; the latest model will be added in August. The reason for the expansion is the great interest shown by HOYER and industrial customers in sustainable action. One of the main objectives of the Group is to minimize the CO2 footprint in all logistics processes.
The trucks, which run on natural gas, are currently used to transport gas and mineral oil. The first unit was bought in 2018, and other models have followed since. “We want to further expand this fleet. Our customers are also very interested in moving forward together on the issue of sustainability,” explains Anna Krüger, Director of Gas Business Development for the HOYER Group. “Everyone is concerned about reducing the CO2 footprint, so we try, whenever possible, in a sensible and available way, to offer CNG, LNG or biofuel as alternatives,” continues Krüger.
Engines powered by LNG produce between 10 and 20% less CO2 emissions than diesel ones and, in the case of using bio-LNG, they are even reduced by 90%.
While LNG is used in high-performance trucks, most of HOYER’s CNG vehicles are vans of the class up to 7.5 tonnes. For short distances, CNG is also a real option in heavy transport: a CNG truck has been used for mineral oil logistics in the Hamburg metropolitan area since mid-August.
