April 21, 2022. Within the framework of International Earth Day, which has been celebrated every April 22 for more than 50 years, to raise global awareness about the interdependent relationship between human beings, living beings and the natural environment, PepsiCo announces the purchase of 10 natural gas trucks to replace a fraction of traditional fuel units. Through this acquisition and in line with Pep+, its strategic transformation with sustainability as its central axis, the multinational seeks to promote change towards a sustainable transport system.
With this project, the company accelerates its plans to address climate change with the aim of reducing its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by more than 40% by 2030 throughout its value chain and achieving net zero emissions by the year 2040 globally. This includes the combustion of fossil fuels on site and the fuel consumption of the fleet that will allow to start a transformation to move 85% of the production in own fleet to the distribution centers in which 20% are with natural gas propulsion.
“At PepsiCo we continue to work to build a Positive Value Chain in which all the actors in this ecosystem understand the purpose we have in caring for the planet and for this reason, we decided to start the year by launching this great sustainable transportation alternative. These 10 new trucks are added to our distribution fleet that allow us to continue building that path to achieve the global goal of zero emissions by 2040,” says María Paula Cano, Director of Corporate Affairs and Government for the Andean region of PepsiCo.
These trucks will have Euro VI gas engines which are characterized by low particulate matter emissions up to 262 times less than a Euro II gas-powered vehicle. In addition, buses and trucks that operate with gas -whether CNG, LNG or biogas- offer a very low noise level compared to diesel, since the sound emitted is equivalent to moving 100 meters away from a diesel fueled bus.
