April 25, 2021. The Camisea consortium will allocate a fund of approximately 39 million dollars over the next three years to promote the use of natural gas in vehicles with engines dedicated to this fuel, in the transportation segment of passengers and cargo in the department of Lima and the Constitutional Province of Callao.
The consortium explained that in order to implement the stimulus program for the purchase of new vehicles dedicated to natural gas, an agreement was reached with the natural gas distribution company Cálidda, which will actively collaborate with the execution of specific plans and will form a trust for the administration of the funds
“The objective of the program is to promote the use of NGV and contribute with the State in the plans for the massification of natural gas, to grant transporters the benefits of cheaper fuel, and society the advantages of cleaner energy”, Camisea specified.
Currently, 123,000 trucks and 23,000 urban transport buses circulate in Lima that are, on average, 25 and 15 years old, respectively. It is estimated that less than 3% of the vehicles run on NGV and that the savings of transporters by migrating from diesel to natural gas would be around 50%.
Camisea’s NGV Promotion program plans to incorporate more than 3,000 new natural gas units in the next three years.
“Although a heavy-duty or urban transport vehicle powered by NGV is approximately 20% more expensive than another powered by diesel, the stimulus program provides for the granting of economic benefits that will help transporters to pay for this higher purchase price. Additionally, they will have access to the benefits of a cleaner and cheaper fuel that will grant them greater profitability”, said the consortium.
