Compagas and NEOgás test a sustainable solution to bring natural gas to Paraná

Compagas and the logistics operator NEOgás began a pilot project to test the use of trucks powered by natural gas to transport compressed natural gas to serve the final consumer.

June 15, 2022. In the last week of May, Compagas and the logistics operator NEOgás began a pilot project to test the use of trucks powered by natural gas to transport compressed natural gas (CNG) to serve the final consumer. With this initiative, Paraná becomes the first state in southern Brazil to have the land-based gas supply cycle fully formatted from the gas chain.

“We will demonstrate a more sustainable and competitive solution to internalize the supply of natural gas in Paraná, which can be done entirely from the natural gas chain. We also want to present to users, carriers and businessmen of the heavy transport segment, the feasibility of using gas as a more efficient and sustainable fuel than diesel, and that it can be applied to heavy loads and for longer journeys”, highlights the Technical-Commercial Director of Compagas, Rafael Longo.

In this pilot, which will last around 30 days, the natural gas distributed by Compagas will be compressed by NEOgás at the Ponta Grossa station; then it will be transported daily for about 130 km to the municipality of Arapoti, using a Scania gas truck to supply the BO Papelera industry, which uses natural gas in a series of applications in the paper industry. The industry receives CNG that can be transported by land transport to industries and supply stations far from the distribution network. “This solution allows the internalization of the use of natural gas, supplying cities and regions of the State not served by the distribution network, as is the case of Arapoti, benefiting the local economy and promoting development,” adds Longo.

NEOgás, a partner company of Compagas and responsible for the transport of CNG to BO Paper, will have as its main objective to measure the performance of the Scania truck on the daily journey, evaluating indicators such as vehicle performance and power, in addition to greenhouse gas emissions. “We understand that we have a great advance ahead for cargo transportation in the country, and we want to demonstrate that it is possible to combine emission reduction, decarbonization of the environment and sustainability with cost reduction,” says the Sales Director and NEOgás Operations, Ricardo Neumayer.
