Madrid to use biomethane from Valdemingómez to move buses

The renewable energy generated from organic waste in the Valdemingómez Technology Park will serve to move Madrid's public transport.

September 7, 2022. The renewable energy generated from organic waste in the Valdemingómez Technology Park will serve to move Madrid’s public transport. The Environment and Mobility delegate, Borja Carabante, accompanied by the Economy, Innovation and Employment delegate, Miguel Ángel Redondo, presented the initiative resulting from the agreement between the Madrid Municipal Transport Company and the Environment and Mobility Area through the Valdemingómez Technology Park. Thanks to the agreement between both entities, one of the CNG municipal bus lines will use the biomethane generated in the Madrid technology park.

Thanks to the agreement signed by both entities, and with the participation of PreZero, the company in charge of managing the Biogas Treatment Plant (PTB) in which biomethane is produced, as well as the marketer Axpo, the energy generated by organic waste from Madrid will be used to supply at least 6 GWh of biomethane to EMT’s CNG fleet in one year. This volume would be used to annually supply a line with a staff of about twenty buses, that is, operational characteristics similar to the circular line C1. It is one of the most powerful in the entire municipal network with more than 1 million kilometers traveled and 4.43 million passengers transported in 2021.

The agreement has an initial duration until December 31, 2023 and may be extended for annual periods up to a maximum of four years. It also establishes the provision of support between both organizations, as well as the exchange of information and experience in the field of collaboration and coordination in communication actions for the dissemination of the project and the promotion of renewable energies.
