May 6, 2026. The National Gas Regulatory Entity (ENARGAS) approved, through Resolution 476/2026, a new version of standard NAG-420, which regulates the requirements for expanding the authorization of compressed natural gas (CNG) refueling stations for heavy transport vehicles.
The new regulations replace the scheme in effect since 2022 and incorporate improvements based on accumulated experience, as well as input received during the public consultation process held in 2025, in which companies in the sector, technical entities, and specialists participated.
According to ENARGAS, there is broad consensus on the need to update the regulations to make them more efficient and applicable to the operational realities of refueling stations throughout the country.
Among the main changes, the regulation introduces clearer and simplified technical criteria for the authorization of filling stations for large vehicles, including a classification based on vehicle length and a review of requirements related to signage, safety distances, roof height, and operating conditions. It also addresses difficulties encountered in municipal procedures and with road authorities.
The update also integrates previous regulations and their addendum into a single regulatory framework, avoiding regulatory overlaps and harmonizing its application with other technical standards in the sector. The goal is to facilitate the expansion of CNG use in heavy transport, promoting competitiveness without compromising safety standards.
In this regard, the Minister of Deregulation and State Transformation, Federico Sturzenegger, highlighted the impact of the measure: “Less regulation means lower costs. For years, unnecessary configurations were imposed, such as requiring separate refueling islands for trucks, which duplicated infrastructure and increased logistics costs without any real benefit.” He added: “Now stations will be able to design the configuration that best suits them, eliminating restrictions that only increased costs for the entire economy.”
