December 17, 2023. The Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, capital of the Argentine Republic, carried out an evaluation of the operation of a public waste collection service truck powered by compressed natural gas (CNG).
According to the report presented by the local Ministry of Transportation and Public Works, the mobility sector is responsible for approximately 30% of greenhouse gas emissions in the City. Only the logistics segment, which is responsible for ensuring that the merchandise reaches each neighborhood and also for removing waste, generates 7.4% of the total. For this reason, local authorities consider it a fundamental niche in which to explore new cleaner and more sustainable energy alternatives.
Between the years 2022 and 2023, the Government decided to implement an initiative focused on the evaluation of the CNG technology of a truck in the fleet of the CLIBA company. Specifically, the technical, operational, economic and environmental feasibility of this alternative was analyzed in real operating conditions, comparing it with another diesel-powered unit.
This company has in its fleet a Scania truck with a 280 horsepower (HP) gas-powered engine, certified with the Euro 6 standard, which exceeds the requirements in terms of polluting emissions in Argentina.
The main conclusion of the evaluation carried out is that the migration from diesel trucks to CNG can be advantageous both in environmental and economic terms, as long as the optimal operating conditions for each technology are considered.
