August 22, 2022. The Chilean Minister of Transport, Juan Carlos Muñoz, announced in Punta Arenas an important advance in the project to expand the number of vehicles that can access the use of compressed natural gas (CNG), a fuel whose price is up to 75% cheaper than current gasoline.
Muñoz announced the sending to the Comptroller’s Office for its approval of a project that extends from five to seven years old the range of vehicles to which a kit that allows the use of this type of fuel can be installed. “In this way, we hope that in the coming weeks, two months at most, it will be possible for drivers who own a unit up to 7 years old to benefit from this fuel.”
Regarding even older vehicles, the Minister explained that a pilot plan is being carried out to determine the necessary technical details in order to determine the exact characteristics of the cars in this segment that could benefit from this initiative.
It is worth mentioning that the expansion project is being worked on jointly between the Ministry of Transportation and the Ministry of Finance, and originally established to extend the benefit to vehicles up to 15 years old, but Muñoz emphasized that in this matter his Ministry, although aware of the needs of the families, wants to act with the maximum of responsibility in security.
The official visited the Tecso CNG Plant in Punta Arenas, one of the few in the country authorized to carry out this type of installation.
