February 10, 2022. Given the increase in the number of vehicles in the country, the demand for cheaper mobility solutions and the need to improve air quality in the main cities, the Colombian Association of Natural Gas (Naturgas) revealed the figures of the growth of the vehicle fleet dedicated to this fuel during 2021.
According to the entity, with regard to heavy vehicles dedicated to natural gas, 1,587 units were incorporated, with which 4,061 were reached and the fleet increased by 64% compared to 2020. With these new figures, the 4 segments that use this technology the most are: buses (2,126), trucks (606), bi-articulated (563), and articulated (179).
“This data on the growth in the fleet of natural gas vehicles is fully aligned with the country’s needs to improve air quality and fight against climate change. It is a proven technology worldwide, with cases such as Korea, with more than 30,000 buses, the United States, with 20,000, and China, with 10,000, which are a sample that reflects the world’s commitment to sustainable mobility”, highlighted Luz Stella Murgas, President of Naturgas.
As for the batch of converted light vehicles, more than 16,000 gas transports were converted, with which 639,000 converted units were reached. Currently, there are 150 authorized workshops in the country for the installation of this system.
“Calculations from the sector estimate that, both in public and private transport, the decrease in costs for using natural gas can be up to 50% compared to gasoline, and 35% compared to diesel,” added Murgas.
