Cupra Ateca offers 400 horses powered by natural gas

November 21, 2020. The Cupra Ateca offers its customers 300 horses, but thanks to Ecomotive Solutions it now has 400, 100 more than the standard model. Beyond the final figure, it saves money on gasoline because this Italian company transforms the Cupra to use compressed natural gas (CNG) as an energy source.

Ecomotive Solutions and Autogas, two specialized Italian companies, have been responsible for the transformation on behalf of the Snam Group, specialized in sustainable mobility. Remember that natural gas can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 33%, particulate matter by more than 95% and nitrogen oxide by 75%. In other words, it is also more respectful with the environment.

“It is an intervention with full ‘racing’ style from the mechanical and electronic point of view. The objective is to maximize the potential of natural gas and exalt it as a primary fuel, not as a secondary actor or in parallel with another fuel, if not as a true leading actor”, said those responsible for Ecomotive Solutions.

For them this transformation is not something new, not even the most powerful they have made. In its day they transformed a Bugatti EB110 GT to use CNG and the car reached 345 kilometers/hour – 344.7 to be exact – on the Nardo track. And they have also worked on many Volkswagen Group vehicles, including the Audi A5 Sportback g-tron, or the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, always maintaining at least the original power.

In this case, the Cupra Ateca wanted to go further, to make it even sportier. The car is still a prototype, but with 400 horsepower at 6,440 revolutions per minute, with a torque of 510 Newton meters, it is clear that its performance levels can cause surprise. And above all because the fuel cost can be that of a small urban utility thanks to the favorable price of this fuel.

At the moment 1,000 kilometers of tests have been carried out and it is expected that the transformation will be homologated according to the Euro 6D-TEMP standards.
