January 16, 2022. Federmetano, Assogasmetano and NGV Italia sent a note to the President of the Council of Ministers, the Minister of Economic Development and the Minister of Ecological Transition urgently requesting the opening of a technical table for the sector.
The objective is to allow institutions and supply chain operators to agree on a shared path to overcome the current emergency due to the evolution of the price of natural gas and implement a program to promote transport powered by methane, in particular renewable, as a tool already available. today, but which must be reinforced, for an immediately usable and economically sustainable decarbonization.
Natural gas for transportation operates in the fuel market and, as such, follows the rules of competition, dealing daily with petroleum products. At current international prices, methane (and biomethane) no longer has a margin of economy compared to traditional fuels.
The associations reiterated the serious repercussions that the current price crisis is having in a sector that has: more than 1 million natural gas vehicles circulating throughout the country, of which about 2,000 are CNG trucks, 3,800 LNG trucks and 5,000 buses; 1,500 refueling stations, of which 110 dispense LNG, and 30% of the methane used is of organic origin.
The request is based on the need to safeguard a supply chain of more than 20,000 jobs. It is a production chain to which the Government has not provided any type of support and which it has excluded from the beneficiaries of the VAT reduction to 5% -first in the decree-law “Saving invoices”, then in the Budget Law- despite repeated requests for support from the signatory associations.
