Former Argentine Secretary of Energy proposes the use of CNG in public transport in Neuquén

The former Secretary of Energy of the Argentine Republic, and current provincial deputy, Darío Martínez, sent a bill to the Neuquén Legislature to convert the fleet of public transportation vehicles to CNG.

April 4, 2024. The former Secretary of Energy of the Argentine Republic, and current provincial deputy, Darío Martínez, sent a bill to the Neuquén Legislature to convert the fleet of public transportation vehicles to compressed natural gas (CNG).

The proposal contemplates that all units that provide public urban and interurban transportation service in the Metropolitan Region of Neuquén, Plottier, Centenario and Vista Alegre must use gaseous fuel within a period of seven years.

“The conversion of all public transportation to natural gas will reduce costs because it is more economical and we will also pollute less than diesel engines,” Martínez added. At the same time, he highlighted the importance of “taking advantage of the province’s gas reserves, especially due to the presence of the Vaca Muerta geological formation, since, with it, in Neuquén we have a reserve for many years.”

Martínez explained that “with the use of CNG there will be an annual saving of 4.5 million pesos for the passengers of Neuquén, and simultaneously we will reduce the emission of carbon dioxide by 750 tons per year, by protecting the environment that the neighbors breathe.”

“Natural gas is the first step in the energy transition that the world is carrying out. It is the fuel that best applies to replace coal and liquids globally, since in addition to being abundant, it is cheaper and considerably reduces emissions of polluting gases,” highlighted the legislator.
