September 27, 2023. Institutions and companies that lead the energy transformation of transportation have been able to confirm, at the start of the 10th edition of the Green Gas Mobility Summit, that the Iberian Peninsula has many options to become the European leader in biomethane and hydrogen production.
The event included interventions by representatives of the entire value chain of renewable gases: producers (Naturgy), waste managers (PreZero Spain), gas transport infrastructure operators (Enagás), vehicle manufacturers (Iveco, Volvo Trucks and New Holland), road freight transport companies (Disfrimur, Ojechar, Delgo and Nuppec Logística) and the main cruise fleet operator, Carnival. All the speakers have highlighted the opportunity that the country has to take advantage of the great potential for biomethane and hydrogen production to promote the decarbonization of its modes of transport, and have asked the administration for more ambition in the renewable gases objectives, comparable to the rest of neighboring nations, as well as a stable legislative framework and adequate incentives so that producers, equipment manufacturers and users can carry out the necessary investments.
This was stated at the opening of the congress by the President of Gasnam-Neutral Transport, Silvia Sanjoaquin, who recalled that 40% of current CO2 emissions do not offer an electrifiable alternative. However, “relying on the growing fleet of heavy vehicles and ships powered by natural gas and the advanced development of supply infrastructure, the long-awaited decarbonization, thanks to biomethane, is more immediate than we think.”
