Iranian government pushes for CNG vehicles and filling stations

May 4, 2020. The Iranian Oil Ministry is expanding infrastructure to increase use of compressed natural gas (CNG) in vehicles, a deputy director of National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company (NIORDC) said.

“The Ministry and the NIORDC want to reach daily distribution of 30 million cubic meters of CNG,” Hamid Qassemi was quoted as saying by the Oil Ministry news agency Shana. An estimated 10 million cubic meters of CNG is sold daily to filling stations in the country.

Regarding the plan to set up low-cost small 100 square-meter CNG filling stations, Hamid Qassemi said, “Tehran Municipality has agreed to provide land in north Tehran where there is a shortage of CNG stations”.

Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh has supported the initiative to convert gasoline-powered vehicles to CNG hybrids. In the past almost 2.3 million vehicles have been converted.
