LNG-powered bus travels long distances in Sweden

March 13, 2025. Transport operator Vy Buss and its long-distance bus service Vy bus4you aim to offer a stress-free start and end to a trip, with long-distance bus journeys that offer premium comfort without compromise. If the passenger lives in the Värmland region of Sweden, that 350 km stretch between Karlstad and Arlanda Airport, near Stockholm, can now be traveled much more sustainably. All thanks to a Scania Irizar bus built on Scania’s new liquefied natural gas (LNG) platform, which can run on either biogas or natural gas, or a combination of both, and is capable of traveling the 700 km round trip without refueling, with enough fuel in the tank.

“We have around 600 buses and coaches in Sweden. Most operate in urban or regional public transport and combine electric, HVO100, and compressed biogas vehicles. Each of them offers the right solution to minimize emissions on each route or transport,” says Marcus Ekman, Technical Director of Vy Buss, before continuing: “Although only around 100 of our vehicles in commercial operations are express and airport coaches, we must also find renewable and sustainable low-emission solutions for these transports. And, honestly, there aren’t many options available to do so over the distances we operate or for the travel experience our customers demand.”

With the first bus successfully operating for a year, although final long-term conclusions may not yet be sufficiently mature, one thing is clear: the Scania Irizar Bio-LNG coach meets the demanding needs for premium comfort, reliability, drivability, and sustainability.

From a business perspective, operating economics can vary by case, with scale, local political decisions, and the fuel market being influencing factors. And while it’s not a guarantee for everyone everywhere, Scania Bio-LNG coaches typically offer reduced operating costs compared to traditional diesel options.
