Naturgas President appointed as representative to the International Gas Union

With this appointment, Murgas becomes the only woman among the eight regional coordinators who are part of this global organization.

May 21, 2025. Within the framework of the World Gas Congress being held this week in Beijing, Naturgas President Luz Stella Murgas Maya was appointed as coordinator for Latin America and the Caribbean of the International Gas Union (IGU) for the period 2025-2028. With this appointment, Murgas becomes the only woman among the eight regional coordinators who are part of this global organization, which brings together more than 150 associations and companies in the sector in 80 countries.

In this position, Murgas will be responsible for representing the interests and priorities of Latin America and the Caribbean at a key moment for the global energy future, where issues such as decarbonization, equitable access to energy, and the development of renewable gases are being discussed. “It is an honor to join this global team of experts and to have the opportunity to be the voice of Latin America and the Caribbean at such a decisive moment for the energy transition. As a Latin American woman, I assume this responsibility with pride, but also with a firm commitment to highlighting our region’s potential to lead sustainable, affordable, and fair solutions. Our region has much to contribute to the world in energy innovation, and this is a historic opportunity to do so through dialogue, knowledge, and action,” Murgas stated.

The election of Luz Stella Murgas as regional coordinator also represents recognition of the leadership Colombia has been exercising in the natural gas sector, promoting a realistic and responsible energy transition focused on energy security, reducing energy poverty, and accelerating decarbonization.

This announcement follows the one made a few weeks ago, when her entry into the IGU Executive Council, the organization’s highest decision-making body, was confirmed. This reinforces the leading role of the natural gas industry in Colombia and its growing international visibility.
