Naturgy and Greene validate green gas production from industrial waste and biomass

August 16, 2026. Naturgy and Greene have taken a decisive step in their joint Waste to Biomethane (W2BM) project with the commissioning of a pilot plant at the waste-to-energy company’s facilities in Elche, Spain.

The Greene W2BM project, which began in 2023, aims to develop innovative solutions for decarbonization by transforming non-recyclable industrial waste and biomass into green gas. This represents a significant milestone in expanding the development potential of green gas in Spain and contributing to more efficient waste management and sustainable energy production.

The pilot plant, which is already operational, has a treatment capacity of approximately 10 kg/h of waste and produces synthetic methane through a combined pyrolysis-gasification and biological methanation process.

The W2BM project is based on a joint technology developed by Naturgy and Greene, which integrates waste gasification—through pyrolysis and gasification processes—with the subsequent conversion of synthesis gas into methane via a biological bioreactor. This approach allows for the valorization of waste that cannot be recycled and its conversion into renewable energy with the potential to be injected into the gas grid. The project also includes an evaluation of the use of biomass and its combination with industrial waste to analyze its impact on process performance.
