New Bio-CNG filling station in Coesfeld in cooperation between the Westfalen Group and REMONDIS

August 18, 2023. In order to make waste logistics in urban traffic more environmentally friendly, the recycling company REMONDIS and the Westfalen Group are working together to use biogas as an alternative fuel. With the inauguration of a new Bio-CNG filling station in Coesfeld, the long-term cooperation between the two firms has officially started. At the public facility (Dreischkamp 38), all standard trucks and cars can be refueled with non-fossil biogas, which is obtained from waste and residues, 24 hours a day.

Bio-CNG brings a number of different advantages for the decarbonization of the mobility sector: in addition to the strong reduction of fine dust and nitrogen oxide, almost the same amount of CO2 is absorbed during production as is subsequently emitted during the combustion. The total amount of CO2 in the atmosphere remains constant during this cycle and does not increase. For the city of Coesfeld, the project represents another important contribution to climate protection, as Mayor Ulrike Fascher stressed at the opening: “With the opening of the Bio-CNG filling station, in addition to wind and photovoltaics, another building block is added for the city of Coesfeld, to promote the reduction of CO2 emissions and achieve climate targets.”

In the process of switching from diesel to low-CO2 biogas, REMONDIS will increasingly use green gas-powered waste collection vehicles in the region, some of which have already been on the roads of Münsterland since 2021. This project now it is also backed by the newly built service station.

With autonomy of up to 800 km, Bio-CNG is especially suitable for fleets of light and heavy commercial vehicles in local transport. The refueling process hardly differs from recharging with diesel and takes the same time. Biogas forms a global package from which the environment and the economy benefit in equal measure: “Bio-CNG is an alternative fuel that can be used very well to reconcile ecological and economic objectives,” explains Andre Stracke, Head of Mobility of Westfalen. “Due to local production, the effects of geopolitical price fluctuations, as we have often experienced in the past, are not as significant, so the vehicles can be used economically in a plannable way.”
