Peru to promote energy transition to use natural gas in cargo and passenger transport

The Ministry of Energy and Mines will seek to coordinate initiatives with the private sector to promote the use of natural gas in transportation.

January 16, 2026. The Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM) will seek to coordinate initiatives with the private sector to promote the use of natural gas in transportation, including urban transport, interprovincial travel, and heavy duty services, stated Minister Luis Bravo De la Cruz.

In a meeting with the delegation from Pluspetrol Peru, headed by its General Manager, Germán Álvarez, the Minister highlighted the importance of natural gas as a more economical energy source with a lower environmental impact, which would generate a highly positive impact as its participation in the transportation sector increases.

“We must join forces and work on strategies to discourage the use of traditional fuels and move towards the widespread adoption of natural gas in transportation, which would benefit citizens and transportation operators, as well as reduce the carbon footprint,” he emphasized.

He stated that one objective of his administration is to lay the groundwork for consolidating the diversification of the energy matrix and making natural gas a more widespread energy option in the interior of the country, generating savings for citizens through the use of a resource with a lower environmental impact than the one the country produces.

Pluspetrol representatives welcomed Minister Bravo’s initiative and emphasized the importance of implementing government policies aimed at expanding the use of natural gas and exploring potential new hydrocarbon reserves, in order to broaden the scope of natural gas use in various activities.

The executives highlighted that the Camisea project supports the government’s initiative to expand natural gas access, as well as initiatives to extend service to new regions, including Cusco, the country’s main producer.
