Protemax bets on the conversion of buses and trucks to CNG in Peru

Protemax will begin the conversion of vehicles to CNG in February 2025 and for this, it is implementing a 10,000 square meter plant.

February 18, 2025. The conversion of buses and trucks to compressed natural gas (CNG) represents a milestone in the popularization of this fuel in heavy transport. With CNG, companies save more than 50% and contribute to caring for the environment by choosing clean energy.

Protemax, a leading company in safety and comfort solutions for vehicles, will expand its CNG Division – together with Cálidda – through the conversion of buses and trucks, allowing more transporters to access a clean, safe and economical alternative. This step represents a milestone in the popularization of natural gas in heavy transport since, currently, few companies offer this service.

Protemax will begin the conversion of vehicles to CNG in February 2025 and for this, it is implementing a 10,000 square meter plant. Initially, the focus is on public and private transport buses, due to the high demand in the sector; however, the conversion of trucks and other heavy transport units with diesel engines is also contemplated.

“Opting for CNG engines not only reduces the cost of fuel on a day-to-day basis, but also represents considerable accumulated savings at the end of the year. For example, in the case of buses, companies can save up to US$ 2,256 per month per unit, depending on the average route, which represents US$ 27,072 in annual savings per vehicle. This, taking as a reference a route of 5,590 kilometers per month,” said Luis Castro, General Manager of Protemax.

“At Cálidda, we continue to promote the development of CNG as the best alternative for heavy transport in Peru. Through collaboration with Protemax, we seek to popularize natural gas for the benefit of all transporters, allowing them to reduce their operating costs and contribute to the decarbonization of the sector,” said Jaime Aguilar, Deputy Manager of Heavy Transport at Cálidda.
