Repsol supplies liquefied biomethane to Brittany Ferries ships in Santander

The shipowner's first two ships to run on LNG are already operating on long-distance routes from Spain to England and Ireland.

September 21, 2024. The oil company Repsol has begun supplying liquefied biomethane (Bio-LNG) to Brittany Ferries ships at the liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering terminal in Santander, Spain. The first operation consisted of the provision of a total of 60 tons, equivalent to three truckloads of this fuel. It should be noted that the use of Bio-LNG does not require any type of modification to the ships’ engines and does not affect their performance, since it has the same chemical composition as conventional gas.

The event occurs after the investments that Brittany Ferries has made to have a more sustainable fleet of ships. The renovation, which began in 2020, will be completed in 2025 with a total of five new ships added to the shipping company, four of which will be powered by LNG. The ‘Salamanca’ and ‘Santoña’, the first to operate thanks to liquefied natural gas, already operate on the French shipping company’s long-distance routes and go from Spain to England and Ireland. The vessels that are yet to arrive will operate thanks to LNG and electricity. The forecast is that they will be in Europe by the end of the year for their preparation at the Astander Shipyard before starting to sail in the spring of 2025.
