February 7, 2022. The fleet of natural gas vehicles in Spain reached a total of 32,667 units in 2021, according to the Iberian Association of Natural Gas for Mobility (Gasnam).

In the year, the increase in registrations of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks stands out, by 34% and 60% respectively, compared to 2020. Some 855 units have been registered, of which 521s are LNG and 334s are CNG.

Heavy industrial vehicles gain market share this year compared to 2020, increasing from 3.0% to 4.1%.

The natural gas refueling network has also grown, increasing its capillarity throughout the Spanish geography, with the opening of 13 LNG supply points, 15 CNG in Spain and 1 Bio-CNG in Portugal, which constitutes 191 facilities in Spain and 24 in Portugal.

On the other hand, in 2021, 9 passenger cars and 2 hydrogen buses have been registered, which marks a significant milestone as the year in which the development of heavy mobility with hydrogen begins.

The vehicle market in Portugal grew by 1.9% compared to 2020, while the natural gas segment grew by 26.6%. This is fundamentally due to growth in bus registrations (+154) and trucks (+58) despite difficulties in supplying these vehicles, particularly LNG.
